It’s the first day of Watches & Wonders 2014 in Hong Kong, and we can’t wait to see what new timepieces will be launched at the second edition of the annual haute horlogerie exhibition over the next four days. Panerai, for one, has taken the opportunity to launch its long-awaited new Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic in red gold or steel. For the first time, the Radiomir 1940 features an automatic movement — and it’s a new movement at that.

An off-centre micro-rotor,  smaller in diameter than the calibre itself, is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the new P.4000 calibre. Inserted within the movement rather than set atop it, the newly designed micro-rotor is one reason why the P.4000 measures just 3.95mm thick, and still manages to boast a power reserve of 3 days. (Compare this to say, the P.9000 automatic calibre, which clocks in with a thickness of 7.9mm.)

Elsewhere, this 45mm watch has the hallmarks that give the Radiomir 1940 its strong, clean look: The lugs are formed from the same block as the case for greater comfort, and the dial’s sandwich construction boosts the luminosity of its hour markers. Another new addition to the family, then, for Paneristis to go gaga over.
