[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]aking over the space previously occupied by popular buffet restaurant Olive Tree, Ash & Elm lives up to its predecessor’s legacy with a selection of dishes tailored perfectly for large groups to share.

The house-made charcuterie – consisting of air dried pork belly, hot smoked pork loin, beef pastrami, cold roast beef and foie gras with smoked duck – is a great way to start. This is accompanied by a bread basket served with a subtly savoury seaweed butter, also house-made. Also a must-try is the positively irresistible pumpkin and bacon flatbread, and for main course to share: a beef tasting platter featuring Australian rib eye ribeye, New York strip and Bavette d’Aloyau. The cuts are even served pre-sliced for easy sharing by all at the table.

Adding to the old-fashioned feel of the restaurant is the quiet attentiveness and dignified service from the staff. Beyond discreetly refilling glasses and clearing plates, they are also on hand to give thoughtful suggestions, such as when we displayed an overzealous eagerness to order more.

But if you’re still a fan of the buffet, fret not. The restaurant also offers a semi buffet for lunch, and a Sunday brunch that features main dishes like lobster risotto and braised beef cheek, cooked a la minute and served in tapas-sized portions.
