Drink for charity at the “Flying Sommelier” dinner series in Singapore, sure to delight

Four of Singapore's forefront sommeliers will educate in the name of charity come May 8 - July 10, 2017.

It can be intimidating to talk to a sommelier during dinner. Decked in suit and tie, some can be particularly verbose when it comes to describing wine, and forget to trim the technicality from their spiels for customers less familiar with the verbage. This enthusiasm can be misconstrued as “snootiness”. That misconception is what “The Flying Sommeliers” hope to clear up.

Comprising four leading sommeliers in Singapore’s food scene, the group has organised a series of five fund-raising wine dinners at some stellar dining establishments over a month-long period. To inject levity into the experience, they’ll be dropping the starched outfit for super-villain costumes, playing characters from sci-fi film franchise Star Wars.

Not your everyday sommelier.

Amir Solay, one of the original founding trio, said: “We wanted to debunk the myth that Sommeliers are snooty and only concerned about making money. There are up to 30 seats this year per dinner and we are hoping to sell all of them and raise at least SGD $6000 through both the dinners and the auctions.” The intended beneficiary is the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) and funds raised from the silent auctions concluding each dinner (as well as 10% of the restaurants’ takings) will go towards the organisation.

Acclaimed sommeliers Mohamad Fazil, Michael Leitner and Gerald Lu are on board as well. Take it from us, these are gentlemen who have not only mastered their wine knowledge, but are experts in the art of merrymaking as well.
