[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t’s awards season in the culinary scene – we just wrapped up the G Restaurant Awards 2016 which named the best restaurants in Singapore. Hours later, the much-watched World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016 list was announced. The ceremony was held at Cipriani Wall Street, New York, USA and this year featured 23 countries across six continents.

2016’s list brings about a new #1 not only in restaurant but also in cuisine – for the first time, an Italian restaurant topped the list – Osteria Francescana. Helmed by chef Massimo Bottura in Modena, Italy, it moves up from the second spot it held in 2015, trading places with last year’s #1, El Celler de Can Roca, the Roca brothers’ Spanish establishment in Girona, Spain.

And how did Singapore fare in the global scene? We compare the results with last year’s world list and the Asian list, which was released in March this year.

• Restaurant Andre remains Singapore’s only top 50 placement this year, but moves up 14 spots from #46 to #32, the sixth consecutive time Andre Chiang’s restaurant has made the list. In a thank you letter to his guests, Chiang notes the many accolades his dining establishment has received this year, including a third spot on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016. Restaurant Andre received an Award of Excellence during the G Restaurant Awards 2016.

• Beyond the top 50, new entrant Burnt Ends comes in at #70, helmed by chef David Pynt and also owned by Chiang. In the Asian list, the Australian BBQ joint made a 16-place leap from #30 to #14.

• With a freshly-minted chef de cuisine in Kirk Westaway, former #74 Jaan did not appear on this year’s list, but reined in a respectable #29 in Asia, with plenty of room to grow. Waku Ghin, which placed #70 in the world last year, also dropped off the list, but remains highly placed in Asia at #6. Both Waku Ghin and Jaan received Awards of Excellence during the G Restaurant Awards 2016.
