City tours are great for those looking for a high-energy holiday itinerary. But if you are thinking of the best destinations to melt your stress and worries away, think small. Lesser-known islands and small towns make ideal settings for a stress-busting holiday. Take a break from the usual holiday destinations and check out these laidback alternatives.

1. Favignana, Italy

Located west of Palermo in Sicily, Favignana is popularly known by the locals as a small tuna-fishing island. But the island has a rich history that attracts many culture buffs to its shores. It was once a gateway to Europe, and was invaded by the Vikings and Romans.

While the island is not packed with tourist attractions, it is perfect for travellers who want to take their time to absorb the idyllic island atmosphere. True to its heritage, foodies can enjoy freshly caught seafood on this island. You can also take advantage of its island location and go on various water-related activities such as snorkelling and scuba diving.

Want to take it easy? Join some of the fishermen on a fishing trip. Learn more about the small town on the island by going on a bicycle tour and drop by some of its shops and boutiques for some souvenirs. Before the day ends, stop by one of its quaint cafes for a cup of Italian coffee and people watch.

2. Morzine, France

The best time to visit Morzine is in spring, especially in April and May, when sparse snow can be seen dusting the top of the mountains, providing a beautiful contrast to the lush, verdant valleys. Although Morzine is a popular destination for skiing in spring, another set of attractions is in store for travellers.

In place of skiing, go on river rafting along the Drance river to Lake Geneva. Feeling daring? Get a bird’s eye view of the area by paragliding off the mountain tops. If you want to clear your mind, nothing beats taking a hike in the woods. Put on your hiking boots and go on a guided walk, or explore the beautiful mountain trails.

3. Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

Aside from being the site of the iconic Lone Tree of Lake Wakana, the lake is a great spot for busy urbanites to unwind. The Lake Wanaka area is spectacularly framed by the South Island’s Southern Alps, giving you an unblocked view of the mountains. Feel the urge to do some walking?

Head down to the nearby Mount Aspiring National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site where you can explore waterfalls, impressive glaciers and lush rainforests. In summer when the weather is pleasantly warm, take a boat cruise around the lake. Cook your catch for lunch and go swimming with your friends.

4. Koh Lanta, Thailand

Free of big hotel chains and neon lights, Koh Lanta retains its untouched beauty, making it a quiet escape from the big city. Befitting its “secret paradise” title, it takes some trekking to get to this unspoilt spot – so work those leg muscles before spending days lying on the beach.Koh Lanta has a very laid-back, mellow vibe.

Take your time to visit the Kantiang village to check out local delicacies before exploring the rest of the island. Take out your snorkelling gear and get up close with its rich marine life. At Ko Haa, take a dip in one of its dozen dive sites. Explore caverns, and witness turtles, octopus and fishes swimming past the corals. If you are not feeling adventurous, just chill out by the warm beach, watch the sun set and feel your stress dissipate.

5. Nisyros, Greece

With black sand beaches, scenic hilltop villages and friendly tavernas peppered across the island, Nisyros is quite possibly one of the most beautiful Aegean islands. As the Greek government does not heavily promote tourism on the island, Nisyros’ low key status makes it a haven for the arty, hipster crowd. It has captured the interest of cultural travellers with its romantic architecture.

Stay at Emporios, a hilltop village overlooking the caldera for one-of-a-kind morning view. Next, check out the local craftworks such as its tailor shops, stone makers and blacksmith workshops. Make a beeline to medieval buildings, such as the Castle of Pantoniki, the monastery of Panagia Spiliani and the Paleokastro.
