[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap] leisurely afternoon tea calls for indulgence. The kind where there are plush sofas to sink into, pretty crockery to make the table a sight for sore eyes, and an endless array of nibbles to pick from.

Afternoon tea on a weekend at Regent Singapore’s Tea Lounge plays to this tune. Drinks are double the pleasure with a choice of two beverages – your pick of coffee, tea or chocolate served free flow. Cheeses range from an aged Spanish manchego intense in flavour to a mild Italian taleggio, with plenty of dried nuts, fruits, fig jam and truffle honey to go with. Nearby, a pianist taps out light, summery tunes as background music to your afternoon tete-a-tete.

Take it all in slowly, because mains are where the fun begins. There’s a hulking truffle and mushroom beef roast, for instance, that station chefs will happily heap on your plate with roasted baby potatoes and crispy Yorkshire pudding. Asian favourites of chilli crab and fried mantou, chicken rice and satay also jostle for top spot here, though it’s a piquant bowl of king prawn congee turned a sweet golden with dried scallops, pumpkin and goji berries that is the standout.

While sweets served on porcelain spoons and mini glass cups are dainty, the pillowy scones come with a generous selection of spreads like clotted cream, lemon curd, or a tart cassis and violet jam. Order a pot of Italian Panettone tea to wash it all down. The playful brew has all the fruitiness of the festive cake, yet is light enough to sip and nurse for a bit. Or at least as long as it takes before round two begins.
