[dropcap size=small]L[/dropcap]a Taperia is the kind of place to make a beeline for after a hectic workday. Tucked away on the second floor of Shaw Centre, this Spanish tapas joint by the Les Amis Group is outfitted in terracotta tones and low lights for a cosy, rustic vibe. The wine list is unpretentious, as is the food that is heartily satisfying.

Take a cold starter of three vibrantly red piquillo peppers stuffed with tuna and anchovy remoulade. Its presentation is classic no-fuss tapas style, but it has us mopping up every bit of the moreish creamy filling and sauce.

We also appreciate the fact that instead of serving a whole pig that would usually require ordering a day or two in advance, La Taperia offers a dish fit for two. A generous slab with a golden crackling that hides a glorious layer of fat, it is a must-try. Juicy Calanda peaches and onions caramelised in sherry vinegar lend a sweet tartness that balances this out.

Service is exactly what you’d hope for (but don’t always get) in a casual joint like this – friendly and intuitive, without being too intrusive. What started out as a single table for two persons was quickly turned into a comfortable double when our waiter noted the number of dishes ordered. And, if you’re there Thursdays to Saturdays, orders for tapas run until midnight – because the restaurant knows to let the good times roll.
